Johann Tielke was one of the most influential writers of the military art in the age of Frederick the Great. His understanding of battle, the movement of soldiers and field fortification was based upon his own eye-witness observations. His works were essential study in his day and his great work was translated into English by members of the Craufurd family including the famous “Black Bob” Robert Craufurd of Peninsular War fame. Because of the significance of this, the first volume contains extensive information on the Craufurds. It deals with an example of the warfare of the period, based on Tielke's eyewitness observations, the Battle of Maxen. But this is not all. We like to add extra value! So in addition are observations on artillery by Robert Craufurd & Stephen, plus further (now translated) studies by Tielke of the Campaign of 1761 and also the Three Sieges and Loudon's ascent of the Fortress of Schweidnitz in the campaigns 1757-1762.
